Michael Skrypnyk began his career in 1997 as a sheet metal apprentice and earned his Red Seal certification in 2005. He gained extensive experience working in both commercial and industrial construction, including maintenance projects performed under GPMC/NMC agreements. These early experiences helped shape his strong appreciation for the role collective maintenance agreements play in promoting fairness, safety, and consistency across the industry.
Michael went on to serve more than a decade in leadership with SMART Local 296, holding progressively senior roles including Office Manager, Financial Secretary-Treasurer, and Business Manager. He currently serves as an International Representative with the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART), representing members throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba, including the roofing and architectural metals sectors.
Throughout his career, Michael has held several elected and appointed positions, including Vice President of the Canadian Council of Sheet Metal Workers and Roofers, along with board appointments to the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship Sheet Metal Trade Board and the International Foundation of Employee Benefits (Canadian Board). He is respected for his steady leadership, collaborative approach, and ongoing commitment to effective worker representation.
Michael remains appreciative of the mentorship and guidance he received throughout his career and continues to apply those lessons in his leadership and advocacy work today. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children at the family cabin and supporting his children’s activities at the hockey rink and on the ringette ice.
